Allergies and your pet

Skin allergies or dermatitis are common in pets like cats and dogs where their skin becomes inflamed, itchy, and irritated. Skin allergies in pets can be caused due to various reasons, including plants, fleas, and food or environmental allergens such as moulds, pollen, or dust.

Some common symptoms of pet skin allergies include:

  • Itchy skin

  • Redness or inflammation

  • Scratching or chewing at the skin

  • Hair loss or patches of missing fur

  • Skin infections

  • Rubbing their faces or ears against surfaces

To treat skin allergies in pets, talk to your veterinarian to determine the cause of the allergy and develop a treatment plan. Treatment may include topical or oral medications, allergy shots, or dietary changes. Additionally, regular grooming and flea preventatives can help reduce itching and irritation in pets with skin allergies.
